Note that Internet Explorer does not need to be the default browser. An end user without the administrative rights can run FLEXnet Connect to check for updates, but often the update installation will require administrative rights to be run.

Universal Client Requirements

FLEXnet Connect Universal Client supports the following platforms: UNIX, Linux, and Mac OS X. JRE versions 1.2.2 and later are supported for the Universal client run time. An end user without administrative rights can run FLEXnet Connect to check for updates, but often the update installation will require administrative rights to be run.

The FLEXnet Connect Universal Agent runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). End users need a JVM/run time environment of 1.2.2 on their machine. You can require that a particular JVM be installed before installation continues, or bundle a JVM with the update itself.

The supported platforms, along with the JVMs that can be used for each, are listed below. Please check the JVM vendor web site for any required patches before using any JVM.

Information for Your Own IT Administrators

This section describes the hosting environment for the on-site installation of FLEXnet Connect. This information is provided for an ISV's IT administrator to understand FLEXnet Connect network configurations, scalability, and system requirements.

Network Configuration

The three server components of FLEXnet Connect (Notification Server, database, and Publisher Management Point) can be installed on one computer or multiple computers. For supporting smaller numbers of users, all three components can be installed on one computer. If support for a large number of users is required, FLEXnet Connect can easily scale by adding additional Notification Servers. In this case, the database is installed on one computer and the Publisher Management Point and first Notification Server are installed on the second computer. Additional Notification Servers can be installed on one or many computers.

Scalability

FLEXnet Connect Technical Framework uses an industry-proven architecture for deploying Web applications. As a result, it is highly scalable and very light on bandwidth usage. It can process a high customer volume without the need for additional network resources or servers. While load is highly dependent on server configuration, it is not uncommon for a single Notification Server to process requests from millions of users each day.

In addition to using industry-proven architecture, FLEXnet Connect utilizes an effective caching technology to avoid repetitive requests from the Notification Server(s) to the database. As a result, millions of users can be processed by multiple Notification Servers hitting a single backend database server.

Load testing and real-world experience have proven that FLEXnet Connect Technical Framework can easily scale to support tens of millions of users.
